Here She Is
I can’t believe it’s out there. It’s a very surreal feeling. I’m a published author. My inner doubt is screaming at me saying, ‘Meh, it’s only self-publishing. It’s not the same.’ Well, true, it’s not the same, but it is out there nonetheless. Oh my GOD it’s out there! Out there for the whole world to see, if they choose to. This is one of the scariest yet exciting things I’ve ever done.
I’ve been working on this project, this story, for over three years, technically more if you consider when I first started writing this. You may be surprised to know that what I first wrote isn’t even in the first book. It’s really insane to think that I’ve done this. You see I’m a starter, not a finisher. I LOVE to start things and have every intention of seeing things through, but after a while the polish wears off and the new isn’t as exciting as it once was and the effort put forth is lackluster at best. That’s me, Lackluster Lucy.
Well today that’s changed. I have finally published my first book. I sat down this morning trying to figure what to say here and it just hit me, I’m not done, I’m not finished. I have three more books in this series that need to be edited and published. Heck, I haven’t even finished the last book yet. I haven’t decided how I want it to end. Either that, or I just don’t want it to end. After all, I’m a starter, not a finisher.
I have learned many things about myself since I started writing my first manuscript. Some good, some bad, but in the end I think what has surprised me most is how attached a writer becomes to the characters, how attached I have become to my characters. They’ve grown and my words have breathed life into them. It’s an amazing feeling but also very sad, because in the end, we have to let go of our creation and send it out into the world. Life imitating art, or art imitating life, I’ve just sent my baby girl into the world, hoping and praying that I have taught her enough, given her enough of my sometimes deluded wisdom to her, to be able to make it on her own. That she will be loved and accepted. Now I realize that is exactly what I am doing with my book. I’m giving you my creation, my inner fears, hopes and dreams and I am hopeful that it will be accepted and loved by everyone else as much as I love it.
Maybe it’s not bad to be a starter and not a finisher. Maybe I should think of myself as a continuer. I will never be finished, because I have so much more to give, so much more to write and SO much more to learn. Yeah, now that I think about it, I don’t want to be a finisher. I want to be continuer. Finishers are done and have nothing more to give. I want to complete and move on to the next project.
So from the Continuer to everyone out there, I hope your care for and accept what I’ve given you. I look forward to giving you more. I’d like to give a shout out to three individuals, Bea, Tammy & Eoin. In some way, either big or small, you three were pivotal in me continuing my writing. So I say thank you and I hope my story doesn’t disappoint. To all my other friends on Twitter that have helped me over the last few years, Carmen, Karen, Maureen, Beth, Caitlyn, Katleen and all the rest that are too many to name here, (the list would be endless) I say thank you with sincere gratitude and love.
From me to you, I give you, Reflections of the Legend, Passion of a New Day. Currently it is available on CreateSpace, you can follow the link below. It will be available on Amazon.com in the US and in Europe next Friday, September 12, 2014.
